Week 1

Hey everyone,

I've made it to Pohnpei safely and I'm having a great time so far. The first week has been great. Once we arrived we were all transported to our host family’s houses where we received our first Pohnpeian meal. The next few days after arrival we went right into our orientation program which consists of language classes and an introduction to the culture. So far the language classes have been very helpful but it has been pretty difficult. There are many sounds in their language that English speakers cannot make.

Pohnpei is by far the wettest place that I have ever been.

The view from the Rusty Anchor

A local bar called the Rusty Anchor has bands occasionally. A bad played last night and their name was “Wetter than Seattle”. It rains at least once a day and sometimes about 5 times. It is also very humid here. It has been difficult getting used to the heat and humidity. I have been sweating profusely every day. Everyone who is new here has the same problem and it seems like it takes a few months to get really used to it.

The next few pictures are from some of the places that I have been recently. Hope you all enjoy them. I will try to write some more soon when I get a chance.

Storm on Pohnpei

  1. What a great day. Hearing from you is exciting. I really hope you are settling in. Can you imagin if YOU are sweating what would happen to Uncle Tim? Our weather has been awful. So much rain, but I guess I can't complain to you about rain. I love the pictures. How about one of your house and surroundings? I am off to play a handicap match at the course. I won the first round but should get severely trounced this time. Starting tomorrow I am having the end living room insulated underneath. They will take out part of the wall in front and go under. Ugh!!! Then they will cement the stones, putting in a window in the foundation for future access. Big job, but it will be good for the future and help to save heat. Thanks so much for contacting the outside world and particularly for me. It's special. Love, Grandma R.
